SUPER 700

SUPER 700

What really is going on in Berlin?... I mean we've all been hearing that its quite a razor-sharp hotbed of new emerging culture and creative brilliance-- but does have anything musically outstanding these days? The answer: SUPER 700"

I first saw these guys and girls at a big music festival at Planet Roc, a former Communist DDR German government radio production headquarters. (This group of fantastic stoic buildings was designed by top sonic scientists and architects to be a legendary and functional city of sound. The purpose was to build hundreds upon hundreds of rooms for recording radio plays, symphonies, pipe organs and any kind of music or sound imaginable, and to do so while armoured tanks were fighting outside without interefering with the audio quality! There are stairways inside that are made in equal measure of wood, carpet or concrete depending on what type of footsteps you wish to record. and then the endless fake doors and fake locks and fake phone booths for your ultra important "intruder scenes", emergency phone call sound effects etc.)

In this environment Super700 has their own room filled with the sexy-machines of music, and 7 (count 'em) of Berlin's finest players. Yes I got so excited the first time I saw 'em live that I begged to go backstage and meet them and asked if I could join the queue of producers and labels requesting to work with them. Well, they picked me and we finished their album- an epic 8 month production (for a guy who likes to record and mix an album in 2 weeks thats a big project!!) Words are kind of meek to describe the sound of this group, but try I must.

Imagine the super-talented musician kids in your class who everyone kind of hates cuz they just learn too quickly and excel a bit too much with very little effort- you know the ones. Now imagine they just got better and better and decided to turn their skills towards making magnificent songs that people would easily groove to with harmonies and rhythms far beyond the norm, rather than going into obscure territories that only an academic intellectual trouser or evening gown could sit and absorb in a museum or 'cultural appreciation society" -tho Super 700 still occasionally play, in disguise, those sort of gigs to stay fed while their worldwide recognitions is being hammered out.

Check this:

There are 3 sisters who sing together, Ibadet the leader, with Iliriana and Albana harmonizing in blend that is very much like 3 of the same voice tones working together- a trick usually relegated to overdub trickery in the studio setting only. There is something magical about hearing 3 such similar vocal tones at the same time live, its a bit supernatural. Then the lads: Michael is da mastermind mad composer and funky-funky bassist. Johannes is a master on the guitar- there is nothing he cant do- sadly for the rest of us! Simon has a million fat keyboards and plays by hand what a weaker man would only trust to a sequencer and a very fast computer. Schmiddle is the drummers name. It is his job to tie all the incredible sounds of Super 700 together by creating beats that gyrate and rock so deeply, with giant barrages of noise to keep all the fine details smashing along brilliantly.

Super 700 have toured in Europe, and journeyed to Vancouver B.C., Canada and Hollywood!today, We at Shoplifter with them all the success they deserve, for they are without a doubt a modern classic, not to be missed.
